We are The Community Music Foundation of West Africa, an organization that uses music and the arts as a tool to foster Unity, Hope, Change and Development, providing distinctive, global, musical performance and education to urban and rural youth across Nigeria and West Africa.
We hear it every day – the gap between rich and poor is widening; the government is shifting priorities away from investing in the least fortunate in our society.
Learning a musical instrument will help an underprivileged teenager develop concentration as they must focus on a particular activity over extended periods of time. Developing concentration in this way will also help them focus their attention on other subjects at school.
In order to learn a musical instrument young people must develop patience and perseverance – skills which will help them later in life when they must tackle other more difficult challenges. Crafts that require drying require waiting! This is a great lesson for a youth to demonstrate self-control and patience. Also, as always things might not go exactly as we hoped! Crafts are a great way to promote flexibility in any growing child. There is no right or wrong way in exploring one’s own creativity!
Practicing musical instruments improves hand-eye coordination. Youths develop important motor skills when playing music just as they do when playing different sports.
More and more, music therapy is being used to complement more traditional forms of medicine. Researchers acknowledge that certain types of music can aid relaxation by lowering heart rates and blood pressure thereby giving the average less privileged child who is going through issues to have a different way of channeling his/her energy.
Music builds confidence in anybody over time. A young child grows up having the boldness to speak before people because he has spent time studying on what he will speak just as he has learnt to spend time learning a musical instrument or writing a song. Children who practice self-expression and creativity often become better communicators later in life.
Creating art is a fine way for children to make choices and solve problems. Every step involves making a decision: what color to use, how to make a line, what size to make something. With every choice the object becomes more and more their own. Everyone has an imagination. Art takes it a step further. Through art, children create something that, until that point, was only imagined. Thus, they create visual manifestations of abstract ideas.
